Genre of the Month

In the 2017-2018 school year, students will be studying a different genre of music each month. As we critically listen to different pieces in a genre, students will focus on identifying a variety of musical elements, including:

  • Instrumentation: Which instruments do I hear?
  • Beat: Where is the beat? What meter do I hear?
  • Rhythm: What rhythm patterns do I hear? Do any patterns repeat?
  • Melody: How do the notes move? Which direction are they going?
  • Harmony: Do I hear more than one note at a time?
  • Form: How is the song organized? Do any parts repeat?
  • Dynamics: Is the music soft or loud? Do I hear any changes in volume?
  • Tempo: Is the music fast or slow? Does the speed change during the song?
  • Mood: How does the music make me feel?
